ARCHIVES AND HISTORICAL SERVICES DIVISION

The Archives and Historical Services Division maintains, preserves, and makes available to the public the permanent records of New Mexico.
The permanent and historical records of New Mexico include:

  • the official records of the Spanish government in New Mexico, 1598-1821 (the earliest surviving document is dated 1621);
  • Mexican government records, 1821-1846;
  • Territorial government records, 1846-1912;
  • State government records, 1912 to the present;
  • County records, 1850-1912;
  • and private papers: letters, diaries, wills, maps, and photographs pertaining to New Mexico or the Southwest.
